What I Wish Every Family Knew Before Their First Disney Cruise

If you’ve been thinking about taking your family on a Disney cruise… I need you to know this upfront:
It is not just a vacation. It’s one of those trips your kids will talk about for years.
But also… there are a few things I wish everyone knew before stepping onboard—because they make a huge difference in how smooth (and magical) your trip feels.
So here’s everything I’d tell a friend before they go 👇
Before You Even Step on the Ship
First things first—download the Disney Cruise Line app before you leave home.
I’m not exaggerating when I say this is your lifeline onboard. It has your daily schedule, dining info, activities, and even a way to message your family. Once you connect to the ship’s WiFi, it all works without needing a data plan… which is amazing.
Also—set an alarm for your booking window.Like, a real one 😅
Because things like:
Character meet & greets
Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique
Spa appointments (highly recommend for a little break)
Shore excursions
…they go fast. Especially on sailings full of families.
And one more thing people don’t think about—your dining time actually matters more than you’d expect.
Early dining (~5:45pm) is a lifesaver with younger kids
Late dining (~8:15pm) feels more relaxed during the day, but can be long for little ones
Pro tip: if your kids would rather be playing than sitting through dinner, the kids club counselors can actually come pick them up. It’s kind of the best of both worlds.
Kids Clubs = The Real MVP
I know some parents feel unsure about sending their kids to the clubs at first—but trust me on this one.
Take them on Day 1.
Let them explore early, get comfortable, and realize how fun it is. Because once they love it… you’ll actually get some downtime later (and everyone wins).
Also, don’t skip the Open House times. You can go in together as a family, which makes a huge difference for younger kids who might be a little hesitant.
And if you have teens? They get their own spaces—and somehow Disney made them feel actually cool, not cheesy. Which is no small feat.
Food, Treats & Little Things That Feel Like Magic
Let’s talk about food for a second… because Disney just gets it.
Room service? It’s included.
Which means you can:
Order Mickey ice cream bars to your room
Have breakfast delivered while you’re getting ready
Grab late night snacks without leaving your room
Just bring a couple dollars to tip and you’re set.
And yes—there is unlimited soft serve ice cream by the pool.
Your kids will find it immediately. You’ve been warned 😂
But one of my favorite parts of the whole experience is rotational dining.
You rotate through different restaurants each night—but your server rotates with you. They learn your kids’ names, remember their favorite drinks, and somehow make every night feel personal. It’s one of those little touches that makes Disney feel different.
Packing Tips That Will Save You
There are a few things I will never not bring on a Disney cruise.
Magnetic hooks—this sounds random, but your stateroom walls are metal, and these help SO much with:
Hanging wet swimsuits
Keeping bags off the floor
Making a small space feel way less cluttered
Also—pack costumes.
You don’t have to go all out, but:
Pirate Night is a BIG deal
Princess or dress-up outfits just add to the fun for kids
And if you take nothing else from this section… take this:
Overpack swimsuits.Underpack real clothes.
You’ll basically live in swimsuits and comfy outfits the entire trip.
The Little Things That Make the Biggest Difference
Some of the best moments on a Disney cruise aren’t the big, scheduled things—they’re the little ones you didn’t plan.
But a few small tips will help you enjoy it all more:
Try to do character meet & greets at off times (early mornings or during dinner). The lines are so much shorter.
Don’t skip Pirate Night + the fireworks at sea. It’s one of those core memories kind of nights—for kids and adults.
And when you stop at Castaway Cay (Disney’s private island)… take advantage of it.
The family beach is beautiful, bike rides are such a fun way to explore, and yes—there’s even a kids club on the island if you want a little quiet time (they keep everything very safe—no ocean swimming with them).
But maybe the most important tip of all?
Build in downtime.
It’s really tempting to try to do everything—but you don’t have to.
Some of the best moments look like:
Watching a movie on the deck with the ocean in the background
Slow mornings with coffee while your kids are still asleep
Letting your kids just run, play, and be kids
Those are the moments you’ll remember.
Final Thoughts (From One Mom to Another)
You don’t have to do everything to have an amazing Disney cruise.
In fact… you probably shouldn’t.
Because the magic is just as much in the unplanned moments as it is in the big ones—like your kids dancing on the deck, running into a character when you least expect it, or those late-night ice cream runs you didn’t plan but will never forget.
And honestly? That’s what makes it so special 🤍
